What Is Wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing is a water sport where you ride the wave created by the boat without being pulled by a long rope like wakeboarding. Instead, you start with a short surf rope, pop up into a standing position, and then surf the wave at low speeds (10–12 mph).
It’s one of the most beginner-friendly water sports because:
It’s slow and low-impact
The water behind the boat is smooth and predictable
The board is stable and easy to balance
Falling doesn’t hurt
You progress quickly, sometimes within minutes
Why Wakesurfing Is Perfect for Beginners
It’s easier than it looks
Most guests stand up after just a few tries. With the right coaching, you don’t need a lot of strength, but technique.
It’s low-impact
Your body isn’t yanked like wakeboarding or water skiing. Everything is smooth, controlled, and gentle.
It’s incredibly safe
The wave is created using ballast and slow speeds, not a tow rope. MasterCraft boats also use inboard engines that are safely positioned beneath the boat for added rider protection.
You progress fast
After standing up, you’ll learn:
How to stay in the pocket
How to pump the wave
How to carve
Eventually… how to drop the rope entirely
What to Expect on Your First Ride
Here’s exactly what will happen during your lesson at Wakehouse Miami:
We set up the board for you
We choose a board based on your height, weight, and riding style. Bigger board = easier for beginners.

The “Chair Position” Setup
This is where the magic happens, and the #1 reason beginners stand up so easily.
Sit in the water in a chair position
Knees bent toward your chest
Heels close to your butt
Arms straight, holding the surf rope
Let the board press to your feet naturally

The Boat Does the Work
As we increase speed gently, the boat pulls you into a standing position. You’d want to let the rope pull you forward and stand naturally.
The number one beginner’s mistake you should avoid is trying to pull yourself up.

Staying Balanced on the Wave
We coach you through:
Weight on your front foot
Eyes forward, not down
Relaxed arms
Soft knees
Staying in the “pocket” where the wave pushes you

Dropping the Rope (Optional)
Once you feel comfortable, you can let go of the rope and surf hands-free.
(This usually happens faster than beginners expect!)

Beginner Tips That Make a HUGE Difference
✓ Look forward, not at your feet
Your board goes where your eyes go.
✓ Use your front foot for control
Front foot = more speed.
Back foot = slow down.
✓ Keep your weight centered
Avoid leaning back too far, it kills your momentum.
✓ Stay relaxed
Soft knees and loose arms make everything easier.
✓ Let the boat pull you up
Don’t try to stand too early; trust the process.
What to Wear
Secure swimwear (one-pieces are typically best for women)
Sunscreen (we’ve got SPF onboard)
No special gear needed, we’ll provide everything you need to ride.
